MILWAUKEE -- Airlines are still charging for fuel costs and baggage fees, despite gas prices dropped.Major airlines at Mitchell International Airport—including Midwest, Northwest, Air Tran, United and American—all said they have no plans to lower prices.“It seems as if the airlines want to get as much as they can out of their customers, said Judy Bozich, of Franklin.
But the airlines disagree.American pointed to a projected $6 to $8 billion loss for the industry this year, even with today's lower oil prices. They said the oil markets is gripping them too because the outlook is so unclear.Midwest said its fuel surcharges are now on half of its flights, down from 80 percent.Air Tran said its $15 surcharges are lower than the competition. Also related to high fuel prices is baggage fees.Four out of the five airlines contacted charge $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second.Air Tran said the first bag is free, but charge $25 for the second. The fees probably won’t go away unless consumers push back. Elmer Prenzlow, of Wisconsin Consumer Protection.“The important thing is to ask questions, until they are satisfactorily answered…and if they're not, go to somebody else,” he said.
