A suspect in the slaying of a UW-Milwaukee student was formally charged Monday and a second suspect is expected to be charged Tuesday.

Suspect Charged In Connection With UWM Student Slaying

UW-Milwaukee student Haroon Kahn disappeared last Wednesday and his lifeless body was found over the weekend.

Zachary Zaborek, 19, is charged with aiding a felon in the robbery and murder of 31-year-old Kahn last week.

In the criminal complaint, Zaborek told investigators that 20-year-old Travis Zoellick and his girlfriend drove from Watertown to Milwaukee last Wednesday to see a car Kahn had for sale. At gun point, Zoellick and his girlfriend tied Kahn up, took his car and drove him to Zoellick's family farm in Watertown. There, Zaborek said they beat and stabbed him to death and buried his body.

Investigators said it is a shame that Zoellick took his own life, rather than facing justice for his horrific crime.

Prosecutors said Zaborek didn't actually participate in the crime but that he tried to help Zoellick cover it up.

"Look you've got to get rid of the knife, you’ve got to get rid of the victim’s cell phone, you've got to get rid of that navigation equipment, and he told Zoellick, that Zoellick should take off and never come back,” Dodge County prosecutor William Bedker said.

The charges come one day after Kahn's family held a memorial service. The family was offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. Investigators said two people who knew the suspects came forward.

“If these two had not come forward, we would not have a body. We would not have the means by which this crime was committed .We would not have the location of the motor vehicle owned by the victim and many of the pertinent facts,” Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said.

Prosecutors wanted Zoborek held on $100,000 cash bail but the judge reduced it to $25,000, unclear as to whether or not his parents will be able to post it.

Zoborek is due back in court Oct. 16 for a preliminary hearing. Zoellick’s girlfriend is expected to be charged Tuesday as an accomplice.
